What to Ask When Selecting an Online Degree

Whether you planned to purse a distance learning program for a new job or to advance at your current work place, paying for your distance learning education is not as easy as you may think. However, addressing the right financial questions can save you from taking decisions that might disadvantage you and help you choose the appropriate option for your situation.

  1. How can I finance my education? Even if you opt for distance learning education, financial officers can help you determine your eligibility for grants, scholarships or bursaries based on your current field of study, academic activity and financial need. In case you are not eligible for any of the above mentioned, do not dismiss the opportunity of applying for a loan. The loans are available to online students through banks and other institutions. Unlike bursaries, grants, and scholarships, the loans must be repaid after your graduation.
  2. What other services are available to me as an online student? The answers to this question might vary from one college to another. However, in order to receive a clear answer, it is best to contact an adviser or even a career counselor dedicated to helping students who opt for distance learning programs. You can also seek for guidance other than financial while contacting a counselor. He/she can help you understand the impact your degree will have over the field you are planning to build a career in.
  3. What is FAFSA? Am I eligible to submit my application? FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is a Department of Education form aimed to help students finance their education. In the U.S, the Office of Federal Student Aid is the largest organization that provides student financial aid. It also provides scholarships, work-and-study opportunities to those who are still in college, and loans.

Even though you are an online student, you are still eligible to submit your application for FAFSA. However, in order to be considered eligible you need to demonstrate financial need. You will see that among other scholarship and bursary opportunities, most of the universities offer you the possibility to submit your application for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. All the required documents are mentioned so that you will know what info you should provide.

Being an online student does not strip you away from the benefits an offline student have but it is extremely important for you to know that these benefits exist for online students as well.
